Poppy Somniferum, a red-haired, aloof and curious Elvish girl is one of many main characters in my series The Forsworn Cycle, and has an especially prevalent role in the first book of the series, Children of the Sun.
Poppy hails from the small mining town of Jyde in the western reaches of Aurelius, one of four main continents of the world. Curiously, she would be the only Elf you’d find in Jyde, with the rest of the inhabitants being humans. She’s also the only one who clearly isn’t a miner, with no callouses on her hands and a small frame, compared to the men and women of Jyde and their burly shoulders and strong arms.
Poppy enjoys appearing at her best. Rarely is she ever seen without a flowing, rather colourful dress on, paired with a matching set of shoes and a bow in her long and immaculately kept hair. In fact, if you spoke to anyone who knew her, they’d tell you that Poppy never lets her hair get dirty, messy, or even wet. Children who have tried have been met with a deathly glare, and ran back to their mothers in fear.
Not one to dwell on details or think about consequences, Poppy tends to skip through life without a single care, simply enjoying the world around her. Those who see her at a glance would simply see a woman with her life all figured out.
Those who know her, who really know her, know that she is hiding something deep within, concealing it beneath a clumsy persona. A dark, horrible secret? Some latent destructive power? It’s impossible to tell.
But she’s hiding something, that’s for certain.
